Different Methods for Estimating Due Dates

Calculating the expected due date is one of the most important parts of pregnancy care. While the Last Menstrual Period (LMP) is the standard method, other approaches provide accuracy in different situations.

📅 LMP (Last Menstrual Period)

Adds 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last period. Widely used, but assumes a 28-day cycle and may not be accurate for irregular cycles.

🧪 Ultrasound

Early ultrasounds (before 12 weeks) are highly accurate for dating. Doctors use fetal measurements to estimate gestational age and due date.

❤️ Conception Date

Useful if conception date is known through IVF or ovulation tracking. However, doctors often prefer LMP or ultrasound for consistency.

🧬 IVF Transfer Date

In assisted reproduction, embryo transfer date is known, making due date calculation extremely accurate compared to natural conception.

⚖️ Which Method is Best?

Doctors usually combine methods. First-trimester ultrasound is considered most reliable, while LMP gives a quick general estimate.
